SOS Children’s Village

SOS Children's Villages Zanzibar was the first SOS Children's Villages in Tanzania. It is located at Mombasa road, near the Zanzibar airport at Kiembe Samaki, about 10kms from the Stone town.The village was constructed and opened in 1991, by the former president of the Untied Republic of Tanzania, Ally Hassan Mwinyi. The village comprises of 11 family houses as well as a guest house, and 2 hostels

There is also a village coordinator's house, house for the aunts (SOS aunts take care of the children in case of mother's absence). There is also a playground and administrative unit. The village has 106 children, however, its maximum capacity is 110 children. Children attend the SOS Herman Gmeiner kindergarten and primary school, secondary school, as well as other government and private schools. Also, attached to the village are the youth facilities where the youth move to as they enter adolescence.
